I'm trying to learn to make a real basic video game. My artistic skills are good but that's all I know.

What would be a good start?

There are several quake knockoff game engines that are pretty good. Look on Google under "Quake Engine" and find some of the sites...several of them offer the product cheap or free. Unofficial Quake Engine site is one spot you can check.

Just look around...also learn to program in C++ so you can write your own!!!

Dude, you need to send me all the stuff you got. I sent you my mailing address in your mailbox (top-right tab). Or we can try and set up a fileshare thingy.

DVDs with the software on the way. If you get confident with the rendering software, I will keep practicing with the engine.

When you think you are ready, we can collaborate on a project or two

Taiko,
Just got torque. It is WAY easy to use. You will get it too. I am setting aside the cash to buy about 1500 to 2000 dollars of software from their site in Jan/Feb

Awesome to hear dude. When I get the time I'm gonna look into it as well. I'll start a new forum in our "back office" section so we can get into some more discussion on our tiny project.

Seconding this, Torque is extremely easy to learn and use.
Why would you need to spend that much for software?

You guys might want to check Project Darkstar for the server side. It's an API specially built for MMOs servers.
It's written on java so it will be easy to expand the default server.
