MMOFPS vs. MMORPG 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 16
My take on the genre battle. MMORPG's are cut and paste. They're easy to make, and easy to profit from. In my opinion this is only a phase, a g"gold rush" of the gaming industry so to say. You can see it now, the MMORPG is becoming more and more saturated and demand for something else will come eventually.

I don't want to sound like I'm preaching, but the day the MMOFPS reigns supreme is coming, and massivefps.com will be right there on top of it!

i think you're partial right. i'm with you that people soon will get bored with mmorpg games the way they are right now.

the mmorpg as we know today is still the same as it was like in the early days (ultima) it may have evolved but the general idea is still the same. i can't wait when the time arrives. but i'm not sure mmofps will reign supreme.

what i think is that there will be a shift from point and click, grinding , rewarding for the amount of time je spent in a game to a model in wich you get rewarderd by how well you play and and were you completly control the character instead of giving it commands by pointing and clicking.

mmofps games wil be part of this, but there will also be other mmo game type wich adapt realtime action that ar not fps. maybe mmofps will reign supreme, i hope so, but i don't know.

MMOFPS, to attract MMO or FPS gamers? 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Ahhhh, video games. Got to love em and ever since I used to play Planetside I have fallen in love with the MMOFPS genre, but there are problems and questions the genre has to try to figure out and answer.

Which base to draw from?

Sure, MMORPGs had the RPG group to draw off of. The RPGs were varied and had a huge but sporadic following. Once the first few MMORPG's surfaced, they were the beginning of a whole new Parent class of games, the MMOGs. So they sucked most of the players from the "Golden Box" type of RPG into theirs, they only had really one audience to market and that was RPGs. However, now future MMOGs beg the question, which pool are they going to drink from? Their old base of FPS or the MMOGs?

Therein I believe lies the biggest problem. If they draw from the FPS genre, they have to unite the base somehow. Right now, we are all separated through the vast regions of the FPS. From War Rock to CS: S, from Fear to Unreal Tournament we all look for what we want in an FPS game. They need to find something that is mass appealing which will be difficult to do. Planetside tried to do it but failed in many aspect; Advertising, crappy patches, horrible support - Ahhhhh, that’s SoE for ya - and a game only a small base relished at the time. It was either people coming from games like Tribes or people who like Strats and FPSes because of the team orientated game play. I think Planetside failed to push itself as "Casual FPS" where you can load and kill some people with ease (partly because of the community).

Can they possibly drink from the massive well that is MMOGs? Huxley is going to try to answer that question. Although I do agree that the general Idea for MMOFPSes should be to either horribly kill people, or better yet team up and horribly kill lots of people. You will find that the general MMORPG community is split on that fact. In fact, I will go so far to say that PvP in MMORPGs are generally frowned upon (and I mean free PvP, you want to kill him, go kill him. Not challenge him to a duel or limited by levels). Huxley will have something for everyone, PvE so those who want to gang up on some computers could do so or PvP arenas which will just be a massive fun blood sport. However, I feel if they don’t focus on the PvP, they will be driving the FPS base away and it might just turn into an MMOFPS/RPG or be labeled that way by the general FPS community.

My ideal MMOFPS game will strictly be PvP, I play MMORPGs, but I get bored and willingly want to slaughter everything, Player or Environment. I WANT a game like Planetside, but one which remains fairly balanced and doesn’t get new content only once every year. Like every single gaming columnist and the community says, this fragment of the MMOG's is waiting to explode and might even be as far to say this will be the evolution of the FPS game itself. I will add to that, it might be a long time coming.

That’s my opinion and Im stickin’ to it.

Not sure if any of you are techie buffs but if you look at the law of accelerated returns, our capability on all technological horizons double exponentially every year. One day it will be cost-effective for a company to develop a game that can withstand the demands of a real MMOFPS.

Huxley is just testing the water. Throw an "instance" in any FPS game and have the server turned on 24-7, *tadah* you have yourself an MMOFPS. What they are doing is not necessarily groundbreaking but will still serve as a launch pad for other MMOFPS ideas.

I think the MMOFPS at this point is not as great as the MMORPG, but will be very soon since many companies are pursuing the genre.

I loved Planetside, but I think it lacked many things that make a good FPS (headshots for example).

I think that the general idea of a MMOFPS is going to over take the mass MMORPG genre simply because theres is more to do with a FPS with basing it on skill level so that it will grab all the true hard core gamers, but still be able to allow the new people on the gaming seen to get into it without being discouraged by their lack to keep up with the real players. The simple idea of an instance, which is where W.O.W. and Guild Wars (just examples) are using a lot of there general work, can be applied to the idea of keeping the better players and the new people both separate and giving them a chance to still interact with restraints on the difficulty so that both are engaged in the game play.
