Huxley Update GDC 2009
Wednesday, 20 May 2009 20:42

Introduced as a pre-alpha version, NHN USA showed off some footage of the much hyped, and much delayed MMOFPS, Huxley (officially known as “Huxley: The Dystopia”).

Here’s the recap for those of you somehow managing to just discover Huxley. It is just like your standard MMO, except characters use guns instead of bludgeons. The setting is in a post-apocalyptic world where two factions battle over limited resources and fight off a common enemy, a hybrid faction of zerg-like creatures and ogre like beasts. You can expect to see what you would from an MMORPG, such as character customization, cities, bazaars, clans, and quest giving NPC’s. However, the game is fast, fluid, and you kill your opponent with a reticule, as opposed to a macro combination. The game was announced years ago and hyped fans have been continually disappointed slip, after slip… after slip. Finally, during GDC 2009, NHN USA displayed a promising demo, that indicates Huxley is just around the corner.

Here are the vids:

Huxley PvP

Capture the Flag

Huxley Vehicles

Character Customization

Huxley NPC Boss

The demonstration was on PC only. There was no talk about the XBOX 360 version. Huxley will enter into a “Live service date” around July 2009. If you already viewed the videos above you’ll understand when I say that the only hold up right now is translation (all voiceovers still appear to be in Hangul) - everything else looks green.

The demonstration proceeded to cover the different gaming types:

Quests: Your standard NPC quests. Run around town and get sent on missions. Fight AI with your buddies and level up.

Virtual Combat: Enter this game type to enter a 32 max player skirmish. This is a useful game type for testing out clan strategies or newly attained armor and weapons. This game type does not affect the world map.

Battleground: This game type is kind of like what would happen if the Battlefield Series gang banged Unreal Tournament, and Warhammer Online jumped in on the fun halfway through (sorry for the vulgar description, it’s what first came to mind). Basically each team tries to take over as much territory on the map as possible. If one side can capture all territory, the game goes into “city siege” mode. If the offensive team wins in siege mode, your entire faction gains an economy boost.

Upon winning these battles, character can level up. Kind of like in Planetside, characters will gain extra slots to upgrade weapons and armor. Many upgrades give special attributes such as invisibility, cloaked detection, and speed bursts. You can also get licenses that will allow you to pilot aircraft and operate a variety of vehicles.

Huxley will be finding its home at the gaming portal ijji.com. Speaking of which, they are currently taking closed beta applications for a week of afternoon play and bug testing in Huxley during early June 2009.

It’s kind of hard to believe that they’re actually getting ready to release. Lock n’ load!

It's been a long boring track for the game Huxley to finally make it to store shelves and it sounds like it's going to be even longer. It is unfortunate that.
