The Planetside server hosts potentially hundreds of players in a variety of landscapes, from the war on foot to the air, across desert, mountains, forests and swamps. The goal is simple: each faction must attempt to capture as many facilities as possible on the surface of the planet while denying them to their enemies. There are many strategies and opportunities that skilled players can utilize in order to direct combat operations. The player controls his or her chosen character from a first-person perspective gives combat a more direct role and emphasizes skill.

Leveling and Experience

While a first person shooter at heart, PlanetSide does have an experience/leveling system. Earned experience is divided into three categories: Battle Experience, Support Experience, and Command Experience. Battle Experience is gained from elimination of enemy soldiers, the capture of base facilities, and exploring and interacting with the game world. Support Experience is earned through "Assist" kills: after aiding another player, the first player gains a percentage of experience the other player gains through kills. Command Experience is gained from leading a squad or platoon in a successful base capture. Functionally, Battle Experience and Support Experience are identical, both contributing towards Battle Rank, which leads to benefits such as the ability to use different equipment, implants, or appearance upgrades. Accumulated Command Experience lets the player use several team-oriented abilities.

Vehicles

PlanetSide contains 35 vehicles, ranging from interceptor aircraft to battle tanks to Battle Frames (introduced with PlanetSide: Aftershock). It is extremely rare for any one player to be able to access all 35 vehicles, as most of them are empire-specific, meaning that only members of a certain empire can normally acquire them. Some staple and basic vehicles are available as Common Pool vehicles, meaning that any soldier can acquire them, assuming they have the proper certification to do so. Vehicles play a vital role in PlanetSide, and an experienced pilot or gunner of even one strategic vehicle can often turn the tide of a battle.

Organization

While a player can experience the game solo, the best way to succeed in PlanetSide is to join a squad. A squad is an ad hoc group of up to ten players led by a squad leader. Two or three squads can form a platoon, for a maximum group of thirty players. Benefits of being in a squad include the sharing of experience (resulting in a speedy rise in Battle Rank) and the results gained from working as a team.

Like most online games, a player can create or join an Outfit, PlanetSide's implementation of a clan. Whereas a squad is a temporary group, an outfit persists even if all members are off-line. Outfits are managed through a panel in-game, allowing players to be promoted/demoted. Outfits have eight possible ranks, with the top four being officer ranks, allowing members to invite and kick players to and from the outfit. Outfits can range in membership from two (the minimum number required to form an outfit is ten players) to an infinite number, with the largest outfits having over 100 members. In 2006 an 'Outfit Wars' event was launched for competition solely between outfits on each server.

An aging game
by Jason Faber
on January 27, 2008
Planetside was one of the most enjoying mmofps games out there. The integerity of the game was extremely balanced with HUGE battles and many different weapons and vehicals to choose (and steal) from. Unfortunately, due to the lack of upgraded graphics and expansions over the years (only 1 expansion), the same story line and the same repeated type of battles have lost the interest of many subscribers. Now, due to the lack of population, all you see are small one-sided battles that last about 10 minuites. The good old days of trying holding off multiple platoons on a filled continent for days are over.
Planetside was a great game in its day, and lets hope SOE feels it worthy to produce a new an improved Planetside in the near future with even more options and improved graphics.

Kept me playing for years

I've played Planetside longer than any other FPS, or any other game for that matter. The persistent world and the variety of equipment, weapons and vehicles keeps Plantside interesting long after arena shooters get dull.

The biggest downside of Planetside is that it makes teamwork essential, both for defeating your enemies and properly enjoying the game. So if you don't have friends to play with you might not have fun.

Other cons include the outdated graphics and physics, the bland environments, the relatively steep learning curve, and the "Battle Rank" system, which unbalances things slightly for new players.

If your willing tolerate these flaws, and you have a group of good teammates to play with, I think you'll find Planetside to be the best MMOFPS currently available.

The leader of the MMOFPS

As far as MMOFPS goes Planetside hold the title as being the most popular FPS. Like the Matrix the origional is probibly the most sucessful with two expansions that proved less than glamorous with the exception of the most dedicated diehard fans.

There are a few competitors out there looking to steal the glory however as the most played game for this genre it still hold the title. Will it keep it? That is yet to be seen

Im so surprised that planetside is still so popular, my friend played this a very long time ago and he just started playing again and he is still got skillz, playing with some of the best players on the servers with a high ranked outfit. the style can be slow but if you get in a right place and know what you are doing than your golden, and the fighting style is so epic, wish i could play it again.

Planetside Lives!!

Just started playing this game a few months back. I actually played the beta but a friend talked me to moving to Star Wars and so I left PS for it.

A big difference in the game since I played beta, the first time I ran into a BFR I didn't know what the hell it was!

I don't believe this game is dying out though, there are still a lot of players playing each empire and we had an awesome bridge fight last night. The people in my outfit are great and we have a lot of fun and most of them have been playing for a few years.

2 things though, you need a good computer with a good video card so that the framerate won't get you killed and get with a group that uses Teamspeak or Ventrilo. You don't have a lot of time to type when the enemy is storming up the staircase.

BTW, BlackOps expansion is coming out soon so that should bring back some old time players and some new ones.

This game is dying out

All the original creators of this game have already jumped ship. Planetside is dying out. The popular clans that used to play this game have left long ago. It's now a game for the n00bies.

Fading Glory

While PlanetSide was the killer mmofps, development altered the mix of combat with items like BFRs, which disrupted the harmonious rock/paper/scissors playstyle. Hopefully, SOE has learned from this experience, and will develop future mmofps's better.

From the point of view..

This game seems overall pretty good. I'm not saying this just because of peer pressure and the amount of people that like this, or I probably am, but this game seems to be overall well.

I'd rate this an A and if this can become any bigger and work for a company, it would be like... game of the year, perhaps.

When this game came out it was the best game i had seen to date. the battles are enormous and the people are always friendly. Nothing beats fighting over a tower and getting rained on by meteors. there is always something in the game for someone. my computer is not great but i dont have to kill to get battleranks. you can support your fellow man and get experience too! its very gun if you like halo type shooters but on massive scales. Populations have died since the last time i have played but i remember bridge battles going on for 2 to 3 days at a time. very very very very fun. hopefully its still the same way.

At First the game was sort of confusing, such as the abbreviation's and general location and purpose of everything, but was very easy to pick up on and wowed me with the size of battles and landscapes, along with all of the vehicles and weapons for each of the three empires, overall this is a great game worth the money to buy it.

I've been playing PS since I was a beta tester. I was hooked from day one and I'll be with PS until it die. My only complaint is that the population is slowly fading away. SOE released a lot of new content and the game play is better than ever.. We just need more players. If you are a new player all you need is a good outfit (www.shadowassassins.net) to show you the ropes and you will be hooked too.

The New Planetside
by GoldDragon
on November 17, 2007
I have to be honest with anyone reading these. Planetside is now nothing but a chaotic hell-hole and any -new- players to the game will find it much harder to advance than it used to be in the past. While probably the only game of it's kind, the PS Empires are on the decline.

The Era of Planetside is nearing its end, Armageddon is at hand.

Thumbs and toes up for planetside.

The first instant action i was involved in had about 60 people sieging a town for a hour, truly epic. I read about planetside when it had first came out. Im now kicking myself for not trying it earlier. I dont even play fps anymore. But somehow I love this game. You essentialy level up in the game giving you access to different armor, weapons and vehicles. There is around 40 vehicles. Armors can even cloak you. Iv been playing for 1 day now and im very impressed. T-up

The all time greatest MMOFPS
by Malign
on November 13, 2007
... mainly because it's the only *real* one of it's kind.

Vets remember three empires with full complements of troops waging war against each other til the wee hours of the morning (depending on which morning you were waking up to, with servers on American East, West coasts and Europe). Those days are long gone, but the sheer amount of steadfast loyals who still play is quite staggering. With exposure such as this on MFPS.com maybe the game will get a resurgence, and more vets will re-sub.

For new players experiencing it for the first time, you will love it. If you are playing during a slow part of the day, you won't get a full showing of what the game is about. Enjoy!

A golden opportunity gone to waste
by Mike
on November 6, 2007
This is by far the most well-rounded first person shooter ever made! Gone are the days of cramped deathmatch run-n-gun games like Halo, Counterstrike, Quake, and countless other faceless clusterf#$@ shooters that can't even hold my attention for more than a few days. The only reason these games are even remotely popular is through superb marketing. Not many people knew anything about Planetside at its release. I mean hey, after all I played the first Doom for Christ sake. THAT WAS IN 93!! Isn't it about time to evolve the shooter genre? It took over a decade for it to happen.

To add on that note, I had only heard about Planetside through a friend that I worked with. I think i saw only one advertisement on TV the day it was released. However it didn't take long for my friend to talk me into getting the game. I was drooling over the things he was telling me about it. I was instantly intrigued. I had longed for years for a game like this. I had been bored with the way shooters had become, every game that came out seemed like an exact replica of Doom just with better graphics, and I wanted more options instead of the same set path.

Extreme congrats to the developers on this well thoughtout and much needed evolution to this genre. You had the dream...however, you let it go to waste. Planetside is the future of first-person shooters. It is extremely hard for me to play any other shooter for long after experiencing Planetside at it's peak ('03-'04). Nothing comes close to it. Pleaaase revamp this game! Market it properly this time around. I guarantee you people want other options, they just have to know that they are out there.

A Peice of MMO history
by StarlinVF
on November 3, 2007
More then anything else I think the reason for the Zealous following of the PS Vets comes down to the fact that this is a very well designed game.

Despite the problems with the game performance (which which is a whole write up in itself), the fundamental frame work behind the Certs x Equipment model fits perfectly in a game play model where ones effectiveness is not determined by how many points you have in a particular skill, but when/where/how you learn to use it.

Whats sad is that this mechanic isn't that difficult to build on to make a richer, more complex combat system. So I can't understand why other developers haven't tried to take advantage of that.

I give this game a A because not only was this the first game I ever considered paying a monthly fee for, its also held my attention longer then any other game I've ever played. (Including StarCraft.... and I played a LOT of Starcraft)

Ok, a few problems
by Eliminatordude
on October 30, 2007
This game is ok with a 7/10 because it has some new graphical issues and the fact of the low population. Its hard to get about 100 people of your own faction on one continent so the battles can seem kinda lame. But one of the greatest and most reknown features this game has is its great stability and its actually MMOFPS that it lives up to. Theres no servers that have like 12 people in them. Theres 3 major servers, one for each part of the world. And if they did a server merge it'd be just great

Bottom line.......7/10

Nostalgia
by The Wonk
on October 24, 2007
I lost my virginity to Planetside...it was sooo good!
I'd have to say my favourite part of playing it would be the atmosphere and the sensation of being one of the few hundred soldiers attacking an enemy base, hunkering down behind a little bit of cover, exchanging fire - experiencing some of the most engaging and adrenaline-filled battles in first person.
Then in the distance there'd be the roar of heavy battle tanks firing their cannons, assault Reaver aircraft strafing their targets with missiles and autocannons; huge hulking BFRs - Battle Frame Robotics, or as many called them, Big Fucking Robots - stomping their way into the base and unleashing their payload of death and destruction. And then of course, the enemy would retaliate in the same fashion. Damn, those were good times.
Almost every single kind of battle could and was fought. Aerial dogfights, hundreds of meters up the the air, huge land battles that raged on the plains, hills and forests between bases....I'M GOING TO CUUUMMMM!!!!!!!!
Then SOE gave up caring, and Planetside slowly began to die....

A Great but unsupported game.
by
on October 16, 2007
Planetside is probably the only true MMOFPS as it doesn't focus on an economic system and just barely uses a level up system. There are no NPC's to fight, no time commitments to keep, just log on and get stuck into a fight. Save for a few issues at release, the game was fantastic, with multiple continents, "zones" if you will, locking out any more players due to population limits. It was common to see 2 pop-locks as they were called, and another nearly full continent. This usually meant you could find roughly 100+ vs 100+ during primetime.

Which leads me to a B... since release, the developers have made some additions to Planetside. Despite the playerbase requesting it, mechs ruined the game for a large sum of players. They're far more balanced now, but after WoW and prospect of new MMOFPS', the game is in effect dying. Primetime anymore can't field one pop-lock. With so few players, and ironically, an increase in payment to the monthly sub, even more are leaving for greener pastures. It's a deadly cycle of loss.

New and returning players such as myself are happy to play again, but the game just isn't what it used to be. The same base gameplay that made it fun is still there, but without the numbers, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars feels just as populated.'

It gets an A for fun factor, but D for player numbers. SOE gets an F. Recreating it into PS2, with the vision being similar to the release of PS would definitely be a grand idea for SOE. I feel many vets would come back if the engine got an update, while sadly brand new players would only touch it with a friends recommendation or if it had state-of-the-art graphics (which no good game ever needs.)

Good game...bad company support
by Huntyre
on October 12, 2007
This game is an excellent example of a great game with great start and potential, and virtually no current company support. Between the companies apathy twards the product, to the players not standing up and screaming for an up upgrade, this game is doomed to go the way of Tribes

Funnest game I have ever played
by
on October 5, 2007
In its heyday, Planet Side was epicly great. Despite SOE running it into the ground and the lack of population, this game is still very fun.

If a decent game company ever made an MMOFPS that played similarly to planet side (minus the crappy net code, game engine, and "development content") and actually gave it a little marketing, it would be bigger then WoW.

So if anyone from Valve, Id, blizzard, etc. ever reads this; buy the rights to PS and make a PS2. It will be the greatest game ever.

The good the bad
by bob just bob

Planetside suffers from a low pop, and can be boring during non primetime hours of the school year. Granted it aint pretty, but that's not what Planetside is known for. Though Planetside is indeed dieing, it has layed the basis upon which better games may be made. I garuntee you that if you play this game during prime time you will be hooked, the gameplay is such that you'll never want to go back to a Deathmatch.

Great game, on it's last leg.
by
on September 28, 2007
It was a great game at one time. I absolutely loved the game as it was during and immediately after beta. Pretty much before the first expansion, Planetside rocked.

See, they released an expansion that introduced more territories for players to spread out into. This would have been fine if the timing hadn't coincided with the release of a couple of other big name MMOs (SWG being one of them).

So about half the population leaves the game, and the remaining population is spread even thinner. Since then the population has decreased to the point where there is only ever one (or rarely two) interesting battle going on, on each server. During non prime-time US hours, even that one battle is often pitifully small, or ridiculously one sided.

A year or two back they resorted to using in-game advertisements to keep the game running, because the subscription rate has dropped so low.

If there was to be a "Planetside 2"--a fresh new game, with the same basic concept, and similar implementation, but more [frequent] content additions without making the world too big or introducing overpowered "supertanks"--it might attract the old timers back. At least I'd try it.

Better than the best.
by Kolonel Khaos
on August 29, 2007
Planetside is easily the best MMOFPS and arguably the only true MMOFPS. It is one of the best games I have ever played, when it gets going. 70% of the time is just mindlessly boring, but when you hit upon a good spell its absolutely incredible. I only ever played as a reserve, but it was enough. I think that planet side has had its time though. The graphics are aging, the user base is very small, and few people are willing to pay. I would pay if there were still plenty of people playing. Planetside had its time (peak 40,000 players) but its old now and not enough play for it to be really fun. I wouldn't say RIP though. A resurrected Planetside two, entirely revamped and relaunched would be THE AWESOME.
