The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic 28th century. In the mid 22nd century, tensions are rising between an expanded Chinese Empire, and a joint European/North American Federation of the Free World. The unexplained destruction of the first Chinese interstellar colony ship results in China launching devastating nuclear strikes with stealth missiles. Before all major Federation cities cease to exist, the President gives the command to counter strike with Cold Fusion long distance missiles. World War 3 started on February 17th 2143, it lasted less than 6 hours.

It takes over three centuries for even the most rudimentary civilization to return. By the mid 26th century two great cities had risen from the ashes, thanks in large part to the "Ceres Project”, which was initially an MIT project (it was later taken over by the military in response to the project leader being murdered) in the early 21st century, aimed at storing every aspect of human knowledge on holodisk.

200 years later, and both cities are but shadows of their former selves: Neocron is diminished thanks to a succession of coups d'état as well as a mass exodus to Irata III (a colony 80 light years away formed by the missing Chinese colony ship) and Dome of York suffers from losing a devastating war with Neocron.

Neocron, like Tabula Rasa, is not a true FPS. You point your crosshair to choose a target, but it still works on a "virtual die-roll" system to determine if you hit or miss. It doesn't have the "lock-on" function like TR, so you have to hold the crosshair on your target. The longer you hold it on them, the more accurate your shot will be. Automatic weapons are the worst, since they fire a fixed number of shots each time you press the bire button (3 shots for most guns I think). You cannot "spray-n-pray", because if your crosshair is not on your target for about 1.5 seconds before you press the fire button, you will miss with the entire burst. This was especially agravating when trying to use the flamethrower.

The only exception I found was the grenade launcher, since you don't have to hit your target. Just bounce it around a corner and hope the blast catches them (Sometimes they'll be standing right next to the grenade when it goes off and it won't hit them. An environmental glitch I think). I suspect the rocket launcher works similarly, but never got to try it out.

Some people like it I guess. But for me, make it an FPS or make it a "select target and press attack button". Don't try to hybridize the two.
