Hellgate: London combines role-playing game mechanics with first-person shooter gameplay. Although the game looks and plays much like a first-person shooter, characters do level up, receive points to spend into skills or character statistics, and the outcome of a battle is influenced as much by items as by player skill.

High replayability is attempted through randomly generated levels, randomly placed monsters and fully random item drops and modifiers.

Multiplayer is focussed on cooperative player vs. environment (PvE) combat, there will be a simple duel-based player vs. player (PvP) mode, and Elite subscribers will gain access to full-fledged arenas and a PvP ladder.

In multiplayer mode, players can meet and organize for team play and quests in safe zones - the old Underground stations, protected by the Freemasons' wards. The world will not be split in "shards" or servers, but rather play like a massively multiplayer online game with heavy instancing, such as Guild Wars. Like in Diablo II, but unlike in most 'true' MMORPGs, grouping with other players is optional. Every character is capable of soloing the entire game, though grouping will bring benefits in terms of experience gain and items. Difficulty will be balanced much like it is in Diablo II, where the opposition grows stronger as more players play in the instanced areas.

While it has been stated on the PC Gamer magazine that Hellgate: London will support Windows Vista and DirectX 10, Flagship Studios has made repeated statements that the game will run perfectly well on Windows XP and DirectX 9 based systems. The game is said to be capable of running just as easily on computers as old as 4 years with some settings disabled.

The game is good and fun to play.. until.. you get fed up with repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition and repetition.. spawning of enemies is even erratic and there are a ton of bugs so I didn't even bother playing it online deleted it when I got fed up.
Not bad.

Yeah. When I saw the advertisements for this game, I thought it was a joke or something, but when you play it, it's no joke. It's a cool game and worth $34,99.

The game's pretty appealing with the story line and everything, but when you get into the game, the FPS part gets very boring. It's got no lasting appeal because it requires almost no skill....
Great Storyline...BAD FPS

As a person who desperately craves a good storyline this game fills that to the T. No matter how bad the gameplay gets I want to finish this one to get through the storyline. It has interesting characters, good subplots, a little intrigue and infighting. All good enough to keep me coming back for more. Unfortunately this is not truly an FPS style shooter. Aimpoint is against the "whole target system" meaning that no matter where you hit, it does the same amount of damage..a big toe hit is the same as a headshot. This is truly unsatisfying for "Twitch" fanatic. Guns/Weapons/Items are generic withough secondary modes or scopes (sorry guys no snipers in this game) and show now difference in look between a lower level type of weapon and a customized weapon you put alot of effort building up. Game mechanics are buggy (it has lag in SINGLE PLAYER!!) and has alot of problems operating with Visat Ultimate. I havent been inspired enough by single player to try multiplayer mode. With a better look, true FPS shooter system, and less bugs this would have been at least a b ..right now it earns a D.

I played it hoping it would be somewhat like diablo 3. It is not, your instances are limited. I waited for it to come out for a year. Its sitting next to me I doubt ill ever play it again t-down.

From all the MMORPG's that i have seen, this game has the most RPG in it. It looks like WOW, GW and so on, but still has FPS=D ---> Me likes=D

I went and got the demo, and I gotta say...just wow. HG: London pulled off the FPS system really well. This is what Tabula Rasa should've been. There's no feeling of a "virtual dice roll", as there is none. Some of the weapons lock on and home, but I still find you have to aim to hit. It's not a sticky reticle. The skills are really great too. I just love throwing a grenade into a smoke-filled hallway and seeing all my enemies go boom. :D

Can't wait to see what it'll be like online.

The game looks like it's shaping up to be a shooter version of Diablo 2. Not like that's a bad thing, but I atleast hope this won't be point and click. At anyrate the hunter class looks interesting. Wonder how they are going to pull off the FPS part.

My main concern is that they'll try to hybridize the FPS and "Die-Roll" attack systems ala Neocron and Tabula Rasa (The ol' "point with cross-hair to select target, then check hit/miss with a 'virtual-die-roll'" crap). If they can avoid this pitfall, and use real shooter mechanics I will probably fall in love with this game.

The randomization of nearly everything is something I've been begging and waiting for in MMOs for a very long time. Sure it takes more work than just custom building a bunch of static areas, but in the end you have more areas--by a virtually infinite factor. Because every time you add one more option in any one variable, you multiply your number of posibilities again.

Sure the graphics are pretty, but this game reminds me way too much of Dark Eden.

I'm truly excited about this game - I didn't even like Diablo that much, but I recognized the enious of its design and implementation. I think the storyline is compelling and seldom does a CGI teaser make me yearn the way this game's does. Hopefully the developers won't crumble under pressure and deliver a rich gaming experience with both style and substance.

did you guys know that members from the original diablo 2 are the people who created this game? Diablo 2 is one of the best dungeon crawlers ever, with still thousands of players playing today. Im assuming that the creators will not dissapoint with this game. What's so great about this game is that you can go from melee mode to guns mode to spells mode within a click of a button. With all this variety, i doubt it will dissapoint

From what I understand, the "hunter" class will allow players to embrace the FPS factor of the game. It will be very interesting to see the outcome of an FPS class versus the standard magic based RPG class.
